is my brain trying to sabotage me?
MY DEBUT BOOK 'BRAINTENANCE' (which is all about how to set and get goals) IS OUT NOW: www.panmacmillan.com/authors/dr-julia-ravey/braintenance/9781529080056
Its the end of the day and I look at my to do list, seeing hardly anything I wanted to do crossed off. In these instances, I always think why? These are tasks I want to do, that will move me towards goals I have, so why haven't I followed through? The answer is likely emotional dysregulation (aka self-sabotage), and there are a few ways to over come it...

The only kind of self sabotage I do is procrastination while feeling bad for procrastinating. Even though almost everything is done eventually, the amount of guilt I feel because of not doing it instead of doing it before it really seriously is the last moment to do something that needs to be done is just not worth it. I still do it. Lately, I am actively working on breaking it. I am forcing myself to work on it. It is worth it and I feel better because of it.

I studied physics in my BSc and nanophotonics engineering in my MSc. Now, I want to pursue a career in neuroscience because I have developed a recent interest in this field. I aspire to work beyond academia and be involved in the medical process, treating patients or working on the fabrication of bio-tech devices that aid in the treatment process. Can I achieve this goal by pursuing a PhD in neuroscience, or should I have studied in medical fields from the beginning?

You are amazing! I am amazed and such a smart lady. And you explain really well. Which you explained on another video that in neuroscience studies you really learn to explain and be critical and detailed. So you've got that skill. It's amazing. You explain and inform so in depth and in an understanding way in which not many people can do. I have knowledge about lots, aviation, medicine (not really neurology) and when I explain, though I know lots, I explain so poorly. So you've got a great skill. I hope to develop this. 😅 you're amazing! I subscribed. This is good to learn for my own emotional health also. As I struggle with my mind haha. So I find this scientifically useful and also emotinally ❤

Self sabotage is definitely real and psychologically quite a normal thing I feel. I've not looked into it greatly. Social media definitely makes it very known but in a way that obviously isn't deep and psychological. I think there's a lot of factors to self sabotage. Self doubt, fight or flight etc. You've explained really medically well. I'm new to medicine so... you're the pro explaining all of this and really taught a lot here. I'm blown away by this!!

  • @Cam25-003

You're amazing!! Watched a few of your videos. I want to go into more nursing or paramedic science route but really got interested in the sound of neuroscience. This video is great also. My thoughts go wild. I can overthink and self doubt a lot. And yes self sabotage. But I think people with this mindset (overthinking etc) are great. I think it's our strength as it makes use really think until we have a solution and solve problem. It a big strength. X

It felt realistic, and just being there with you as you went through your best laid plan, through reality, through dismal weather, and seeing how you handle setbacks and go on was really helpful. A lot of productivity videos are like, beautiful bullet journals and how to use apps to organize yr calendar and etc, which look super pretty but I know myself - i will make a pretty calendar and not follow it at all. Seeing how you kept on task through it all helped lots.

What we alcoholics know is that hangziety, which is real and terrifying, is the progression of alcoholism for many. Its a progressive disease. I remember explicitly the first time it happened, it was horrifying. And it never went away because I did not stop drinking. It just gets a worse, you no longer have hangovers. You have withdrawals. Over and over again, every time I drink. I eventually learned what it really was and knew and understood that I had crossed the line, and could never have a drink, mulch less binge drink without the most severe hangziety along with horrible withdrawal. Haven’t had a drink in 7 years, no more hangziety. But if I tried, I would immediately go right back to where I was when I quit, you don’t just start your drinking career from the beginning again. It does not go away ever, it lies dormant in an alcoholic drinker. I hope people watching this understand that this kind of drinking, having hangziety, is not good. It is a very slippery slope for many people, they just don’t understand the progressive nature of alcoholism. Be careful.
